OUR LOCATION
During your stay at SeaSide Village, you can visit the following destinations:
Politika Tower
In the centre of the village of Politika, next to the church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, the medieval tower is preserved which was the home of the feudal lord of the area and a financial centre.
Monastery of Holy Mother of Peribleptos
In a pine-covered ravine and just 1km from the village of Politika, lies the monastery of the Holy Mother, which was re-founded in 1969. Its origins, however, go back to the Byzantine period, since both the village of Politika and the monastery are related to Byzantine Evia.
The path of Iro
For nature lovers, a few meters north of the monastery is the path of Iro. The path starts next to the beautiful theatre and climbs upwards, entering the forest while offering landscape changes and a view of the Evian Sea.
Steni village of Dirphys
One of the most beautiful villages of central Evia, Steni, is built on the outskirts of Dirphys mountain. An offshoot of the Olympus-Othrios Mountain range, Dirphys mountain was, according to mythology, the favourite retreat of the goddess Hera. On its highest peak, Delphi (1,743 m), it is said that in ancient times the sanctuary of Hera of Dirphi was erected in memory of the goddess’ marriage to Zeus.
Edipsos Baths
The hot springs of Edipsos have a history of more than 20,000 years! They are mentioned by Aristotle and Strabo and today they are probably the most famous spa town in Greece. In North Evia, the Loutra of Edipsos is known for the healing properties of the waters that gush at high temperature. Hydrotherapy centres in hotels operate in the Loutra. Among them is the EOT hydrotherapy centre, which is considered to have the most modern and complete hydrotherapy and physiotherapy facilities in Greece.
Lichadonisia Islands
7 uninhabited islands with golden sand and a sense of endless blue, located between northern Evia and the opposite coast of Fthiotida. It is no coincidence that, several of those who have visited them, call them “Seychelles of Greece”
Limni Town
In Limni town of Euboea (Evia), the Aegean air blows and the city looks like an island. It is undoubtedly the most picturesque village of North Evia that wins the visitor with its narrow streets, traditional buildings and greenery. Limni is, an amphitheatrically-built town, near the ancient Elymnion, the place where, according to Sophocles, Zeus and Hera met for the first time.
Holy Monastery of Saint David
The Holy Monastery of Saint David, the Elder of Evia, is located in the northern part of Evia,
in the municipality of Mantoudi – Lake – Agia Anna. It is 16 km from Rovies and 22 km from
Limni. It is built at an altitude of 500 meters, on the slopes of Mount Kavallaris, between the villages of Drimonas and Kalamoudi. It is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and is celebrated on 6 August and on 1 November, the day of remembrance of Saint David.
Chalkida (old bridge of Euripus and home to the tidal phenomenon)
A trademark of Chalkida is the Euripus drawbridge, which connects Euboea with Boeotia. Its construction was completed in 1963 and was innovative for its time, replacing the “Italian” bridge. The bridge is located in one of the narrowest sea passages in the world. It opens and closes with its two sections sliding in like a …drawer. The opening is often done for the needs of navigation and is worth watching. After all, it is combined with the world famous phenomenon of the cluttering of the waters of Euripus. The tides of Euripus have made Chalkida a famous town and have occupied researchers since antiquity.
Archaeological Museum of Chalkida "Arethusa"
Chalkida acquired a modern archaeological museum in 2016 (inaugurated in 2017). It is located very close to the junction of Agios Stefanos, which you”fall over” coming from the High Bridge of the town. The beautiful building of the early 20th century housed the distillery “Arethousa SA”, and is declared a cultural heritage monument. From May 2021, it will be open to the public (8:30 – 15:30, except Tuesdays), as the permanent collection of antiquities from all over Evia has been completed. We should note that the springs of Arethousa are very close to the museum (on the roundabout of Agios Stefanos). After recent interventions, the springs have been beautified and are a small oasis of relaxation, where you can sit and your children can play. Stock up on the essentials, though, as there is no canteen or refreshment area. An interesting variety of archaeological exhibits of Evia can be found in the old archaeological museum of Chalkida, located on Venizelos Street in the city centre.
Museum of Karambaba (Kanithu) and Museum of West Bastion
One of the characteristic landmarks of Chalkida, is the Fortress of Karambaba (Kanithou) or simply the Castle, since the Castle of Chalkida was demolished at the end of the 19th century. The Fortress of Karambaba was built on the hill of the Boeotian side by the Turks in 1684, but it bears European identity, since it was designed by the Venetian Gerolimo Galopo. It has withstood many sieges and is strategically located because it “controls” the town and the Euripus Strait. You will admire – among other things – two 19th century Russian cannons, as well as the chapel of Prophet Elias inside the fortress, which dates back to 1895. In the western bastion of the fortress there is a very beautiful exhibition area with sculptures of Chalkida from the Early Christian to the Ottoman period. Outside the fortress, you will find the grave of litterateur Yannis Skariba and you can climb up to the castle through the steps of the Alcyllium of Kanithos. The Castle and the museum (sculpture collection) are open daily (except Tuesday) from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
Folklore Museum of Chalkida
The Folklore Museum of Chalkida is also located in the district of Agia Paraskevi. It is the only surviving part of the Castle of Chalkida or Negroponte, as the Franks called it. As is known, the fortification of Chalkida was demolished and so the only castle that remains is that of Karambaba (Kanithos). The Folklore Museum of the city is divided into three sections. The first one is the costume section and contains traditional costumes from Evia and Skyros, as well as woven items, embroideries, etc. In the second section, we find exhibits that refer to 20th century Chalkida. These are items that belonged to bourgeois families, but also machines that familiarize us with professions, such as printing or carpentry. The third part of the museum revives a rural house and you can admire tools, utensils and much more. The museum is owned by the Society for Euboean Studies and is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm (tel. 22210 21817).
Emir Zade Mosque
It is located in the Tzamiu Square (named after the mosque) and was built at the end of the
15th century. Its name means the mosque of the emir’s son (emir = emir, zade = saint). It is
preserved almost intact, but the minaret and the facade have been removed. It is built in the
architectural type of the monotrolous mosque, which is found in many mosques in Greece.
When Chalkida was liberated from the Turks, it was converted into barracks and in 1937 it
was declared a historical monument. It is worth admiring the imposing fountain of Khalil,
which is located in the courtyard of the mosque and dates back to 1655. It is one of the 19
public fountains built during the Ottoman period and is decorated with elaborate reliefs of Arabic art. The mosque houses the collection of engravings by Ioannis Karakostas. It can be
visited every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm (tel. 22210-22402).
Archaeological site of Avlidia Artemis
An archaeological site, of great historical interest, extends over the bays of Little and Great
Vathios in Avlida. According to legend, this is where Iphigenia was sacrificed before the
Achaean ships left for Troy. There, the sanctuary of Artemis was found, since the site was
dedicated to the ancient goddess of hunting. In the archaeological site there are scattered
some findings from earlier excavations. It is certain that there are many more under the
earth, which are waiting for the archaeological excavation to see the light of the sun. Access
to the site is not easy and guided tours are available only after consultation with the
Ephorate of Antiquities of Evia (22210-22402).
Drakospita (South Evia)
It is very interesting to visit the mysterious Drakospita, with the most important and most
impressive being, the one built, on the top of Mount Ochi, above Karystos. They are made of
huge slate boulders, identical in colour to the surrounding stone landscape. Ask the locals
about the legend of the dragons behind these imposing buildings.
